Mahito becomes a monk after losing his voice and spends much of his time reading books about philosophy and martial arts. He is self-taught in the martial arts; he never received formal training. The reason he became a monk was because he lost his voice and could not speak to other people. He spends his time reading philosophical works and teaching himself martial arts to make up for the lack of a teacher. This ended up making him very skilled in those fields, as well as very wise.

What was his exile like?

Mahito’s exile was a lonely time for him once he left the temple. He had to wander around Japan and rely only on the kindness of strangers for food and shelter, which was becoming less common in his day. Luckily, Mahito developed a knack for picking pockets and was able to steal food from people who had more than they needed. As Mahito wandered, he learned that there were many different types of people in Japan– people who would kill others to get what they want, people who were generous with their food and money, and people who were innocent but lacked the skills to survive.

Eventually, the emperor discovers Mahito while he is reading a book at a library and forces him to help find his perfect wife. The emperor wants someone from outside of Japan so that she would not have any political ties with other clans. Eventually, Mahito ends up falling in love with Mitsuko–the daughter of a samurai family–and helps her escape from her father after she refuses an arranged marriage to another samurai clan member. In order to avoid being discovered by her father’s clan members, Mitsuko gets married to Mahito on a whim before escaping abroad.

What does the emperor ask of him?

The emperor asks Mahito to find a perfect wife for him. Mahito and his father had a misunderstanding and he ends up going into exile. After returning, he fulfills the request of the emperor, who is unable to find himself a wife. Mahito then sets out on another journey to find the perfect bride for the emperor.

Conclusion

When he was born, Mahito had no voice. He trained in jujutsu and became the best, but was eventually betrayed by the emperor. Wanting to forget his identity, Mahito becomes a monk and goes into exile. When the emperor asks for his help, Mahito discovers that he is not just a monk – he is the best of the best.
